We are seeking an experienced lawyer to join our Global Legal and Global Privacy functions. The team provides advice and guidance on a broad range of privacy and data protection issues. This is a new role with the team which will provide additional privacy legal support for our businesses in three countries within the APAC region: Malaysia, China and India.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide commercially focused, pragmatic advice on compliance with applicable international privacy laws and regulations, as they relate to the Chinese, Malaysian and Indian areas of the Liberty International Insurance (LII) business.
  • Draft, review and negotiate privacy documentation and contracts.
  • Advise on all aspects of privacy-related due diligence (onboarding, ongoing monitoring and offboarding) of third parties.
  • Proactively partner with business teams and build relationships with internal stakeholders.
  • Assist leadership teams to manage privacy risk and maintain appropriate controls.
  • Promote and embed Privacy by Design and other key privacy principles.
  • Be a Subject Matter Expert for the delivery of key privacy initiatives/projects.
  • Advise on privacy impact assessments.
  • Draft privacy notices and, where appropriate, consent wordings for processing activities.
  • Support investigations and incident management, as required, relating to suspected personal data incidents or alleged breaches of applicable privacy laws, regulations and internal policies.
  • Support with individual privacy rights requests, where relevant, ensuring these are handled within required timeframes.
  • Where applicable, assist with investigating, responding to and managing other complaints or communications relating to data protection and privacy.
  • Monitor the legal and regulatory horizon and keep up to date with legislative or other changes and case law relating to privacy and data protection. Advise on the impact of any changes.
  • Maintain a good working knowledge of emerging technologies.
  • Network with privacy, data protection and information security professionals to gain insight into good practice inside and outside of the insurance industry.
  • Assist with management reporting and reporting to the Boards and Committees of companies in Malaysia, China and India on privacy and data protection issues.
  • Ensure relevant internal policies are kept updated.
  • Conduct in-house training and awareness raising relating to privacy.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and enhance operational privacy efficiency.
Knowledge and Experience:
  • Lawyer qualified in China and able to practise in-house.
  • 5+ years PQE preferred but we will consider applications from all candidates with the relevant experience.
  • Expert knowledge of Malaysian, Chinese and/or Indian data protection laws, regulations and practice, particularly as they relate to financial services / insurance.
  • Good understanding of issues relating to use of personal data as part of advance analytics / emerging and complex technologies (e.g. Generative A.I.).
  • Good understanding of other international privacy laws, regulations and practice relevant to LII (e.g. Thailand, Vietnam, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, other global laws and regulations).
  • (Re)insurance sector experience is highly desirable.
  • Understanding of Lloyd's China is an advantage.
  • Experience of working with Information Security, third-party risk management, and Data Governance teams.

  • Ability to communicate in Chinese and verbal Mandarin will be an advantage (to liaise with Mandarin-speaking business stakeholders).
